What is Fire Station Swing?

Fire Station Swing is our main teaching night for Swing Dance classes, held on Thursday evenings at the Old Fire Station during term times.

Key info:

  • We use “terms” as a reference for teaching blocks that run through the year before a summer break, and a “term” block booking gives you a discount versus paying for each class individually.
  • You do not have to sign-up for the whole term to join us. You can also just turn up on the night and pay on the door.
  • There are lessons aimed at different levels, including total beginners to more experienced dancers.
  • Classes are followed by a social dance, included if you joined us for a class, where you can practice what you’ve learned so far with DJ music, go over something with the teachers, and just have a chat with fellow dancers!
  • Most classes are Lindy Hop, with occasional weeks of Charleston and Solo Jazz.
  • No partner necessary.

Advance Bookings:

Booking a full term in advance gives you a discount of about £20 versus paying for each class individually.

What are the classes?

Classes run from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by social dancing until 10:30 p.m. Our classes focus on teaching in an inclusive and fun way. The Fire Station Swing schedule is:

  • Beginners (Learning both roles – ‘Follow’ and ‘Lead’)- 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. @ The Loft
    • All attendees will switch roles part-way through the class, a great way to understand and have fun in a dance partnership.
  • Beginners (Fixed roles) – 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. @ The Loft
    • You’ll pick one role for the duration of the class, although you can change roles from week to week.
  • Improvers – 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. @ The Studio
  • Intermediates – 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. @ The Studio

  • Social dancing! 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. @ The Loft

Please arrive in plenty of time for your classes. Read more about Oxford Lindy Hoppers’ COVID-19 policy. For any questions no covered on this page, drop us an email at oxfordlindyhoppers@gmail.com and we’ll reply as soon as we can!

Which class should I come to?

Beginners

Learn to Lindy Hop! We will start from scratch and teach you the basics of this exciting, varied, and joyful dance so you can get dancing straight away.

We have two 1-hour lessons each with different content. The fundamentals will be covered in both classes so you can go to either, but the content will be different so can do both!

Improvers

The Improvers class is suitable for people with some prior experience with Lindy Hop (for example, a full term of the Beginner class with OLH). Many dancers in this class like to combine with the Beginner class to reinforce their fundamentals as they progress.

Intermediate

The Intermediate class is for people who are ready for concept-based classes, footwork drills and more musicality!

Many of our dancers like to combine Intermediate with Improvers to reinforce the earlier techniques they have learned or try the Beginners in the other dance role.

What should I expect from a class?

  • All of our classes focus on teaching in an inclusive and fun way.
  • The two Beginner classes won’t be covering exactly the same content. So you can do both classes if you want more Lindy in your life!
  • We rotate partners throughout our classes. This is a great way to meet people and learn by dancing with different partners.
  • No special clothing is required to dance Lindy Hop – just make sure you are wearing something comfortable and be aware that you will get very warm! We recommend that you wear shoes without too much grip: flat or low-heeled shoes with smooth or slightly slippery soles are ideal.
  • Drinking water is available but we do not provide disposable cups. Please bring your own re-useable cup or bottle.

How much do classes cost?

  • One class – £8; Two classes – £10. This includes entry to the social dance hour.
  • Social dance only with no classes – £3.
  • You do not have to sign-up for the whole term to join us. Just turn up on the night and pay on the door.
  • We accept card payments at the door, not cash.
  • Oxford Lindy Hoppers has a no-questions-asked COVID-19 refund policy for anyone who has tested positive or is required to isolate.
