What is Sunnyside Swing? - Swing Dance Classes in Oxford

Sunnyside Swing is our main teaching night, on Thursday evenings during our term times.  Terms are normally from October to December, January to March and April to June. There are  lessons aimed at different levels followed by a social dance. every Thursday during our term time. No partner is necessary as everyone gets mixed together! Most classes are Lindy Hop with occasional weeks of Charleston and Solo Jazz. 

What are the classes?

Swing Dance Classes run from 19:30 to 21:30 followed by social dancing until 22:30 then a trip to G&Ds for ice creamOur classes are driven by technique but focus on teaching in an inclusive and fun way. If you have any questions, then drop us an email oxfordlindyhoppers@gmail.com

The timings for Sunnyside Swing are:

  • 7:30pm – 8:30pm Solo Jazz
  • 7:45pm – 9:30pm: Beginners
  • 8:30pm – 9:30pm Intermediate +
  • 9:30pm Social dancing 

Please book in advance for Sunnyside Swing.  We will be offering places for the full 9 week term first. 

All dancers attending our events must provide evidence of a negative Lateral Flow test taken within 24 hours of the event, so registration may take a little longer. Please arrive in plenty of time for your classes.

Which class should I come to?

 
Beginners (7:45pm - 9:30pm)
A 9 week beginners Lindy Hop course. Learn Lindy Hop in 9 x 90 minute lessons! We will start from the beginning and teach you the basics of this exciting, varied, and joyful dance.

 

Solo Jazz is great fun and also a brilliant way to add technique, variation and improvisation to your partnered Lindy Hop. These varied and fun classes will work on your Solo Jazz and give lift off to your dancingSolo Jazz can be booked in a combination ticket with Intermediate+

Intermediate+ is designed to blow away the COVID cobwebs and get back to Lindy Hop with a bang. The 9 week term will review the foundations of connection, energy, musicality, and technique and then build on these with some cool concepts and ideas. Intermediate+ can be booked in a combination ticket Solo Jazz.

What should I expect from a class?

  • There is no need to bring a partner. All of our classes are fun and social.
  • We rotate partners throughout our classes. This is a great way to meet people and learn by dancing with different partners.   
  • No special clothing is required to dance Lindy Hop – just make sure you are wearing something comfortable and be aware that you will get very warm! We recommend that you wear shoes without too much grip: flat or low-heeled shoes with smooth or slightly slippery soles are ideal.
  • Drinking water is available but we do not provide disposable cups. Please bring your own re-useable cup or bottle. 

How much do classes cost?

  • Prices for a full 9-week term are from £45 – £70 depending on which classes you sign up for.
  • Subject to availability, single classes are Sunnyside Swing is £6 for one class and £8 for two classes or £7 for the beginners class.
  • Unfortunately there will be no drop in Social Dancing for now. 
  • We accept card payments or pre-booking only. 
  • Oxford Lindy Hoppers has a no questions asked COVID 19 refund policy for anyone who has tested positive or required to isolate. 

Where do I find you?

Sunnyside Swing is upstairs at the East Oxford Community Centre.  It is easily reached by Bus from Oxford City Centre on routes 1, 5, 10, 11 and 12.
